It's... quiet. The morning is quiet and dull and even the animals lingering on the fringes of town seem a bit at a loss for what to do. The town as a whole seems to be waiting with bated breath, for the outcome of the tie.
A few moments later Tarvek and Nisha follow him out, leashed to him by a rope binding their hands and a blindfold around their eyes. In the Sheriff's other hand are two pistols. He'll lead them to the center of the town and place a pistol in each of their hands before pulling out a knife and cutting the ropes binding them. He pulls off the blindfold afterwards.
He turns back to the town after, glancing at the few stray animals that have set up on the porches to watch. A crow nearby caws out from on top of the Saloon sign. The Sheriff looks to the hotel and a moment later, the bells on top of the church begin to ring. He calls out, louder than naturally possible,
"Execution time, folks! Nisha Kadam and Tarvek Sturmvoraus have elected to duel to the death. Come and witness."
And then, as indifferent as ever, he pops a piece of tobacco.
[ Nisha walks her paces evenly, whirls and lifts her pistol to aim with unerring accuracy at Tarvek's head, squeezing the trigger and firing off a shot immediately. ]
[There it is. The sound he was waiting for. Of course Nisha would be aiming for a fatal shot. Just like expected. The reason why Tarvek wasn't afraid of the whole murder thing was because he knew he was deceptively fast, and it was something that hadn't been removed, being a skill he had learned.
One moment he just turned around, the next moment he's just...not there. The bullet Nisha fired flies through the spot Tarvek's head had been at not long before, while the prince gets moving, keeping his distance and aiming with his gun, firing three times in quick succession.
Unfortunately, while he's no stranger to guns, he isn't used to those that fire bullets. The recoil makes his otherwise good aim be less steady, bullets whizzing by near Nisha. Not near enough to even touch her, but near enough to show it wasn't going to be long before he got a good shot in]
[ Nisha blinks when her bullet whizzes through empty space. Guy's faster than she would have expected.
When he fires off his return shots and they go completely wide, though, she laughs out loud. He talked himself up way too much. There's still some danger he'll pick it up quick, but compared with someone who can hit her off a ricochet, it's comical. And she can end it quicker than that.
Now that she's got a better idea of how he moves, she leads her shot this time, aiming for a kneecap. ]
[He may have overstimated his own skills a bit too much, frankly. Frustrated at the missed shots, Tarvek changes plans, instead attempting to quickly think a way to hinder Nisha's shots, or possibly disarm her. For that he'd need to get closer, though.
Moving towards her is risky, but in life-or-death situations risk is a necessary part. That's why he springs forward, making sure not to be in a straight line. His speed is astounding, but he never really expected Nisha aiming to any place that wasn't his head or his torso.
A bullet to his legs catch him unaware, making his trip and fall. He reacts quickly, holding himself with one hand so he doesn't crash against the ground, and raises his gun to fire at Nisha's head. The bullet doesn't hit where he wanted, but the bullet does manage to hit the hat, hitting underneath the brim of her hat just a couple millimeters from her forehead. He blames his position on the ground for missing]
[ Nisha startles at the bullet by her face, and then tsks in her throat. Her hat is taking a lot of abuse. She'll need to get a new one. Or she will if she's not dead in like five minutes.
She takes aim again, for his gun hand, and fires once more to hit his forearm and disarm him. No taking any more chances. ]
[Nisha's bullet to his forearm may have been what saved her. It impacts, making him drop his gun. His other arm moves to take it, but he knows having dropped it in the first place may have been what sealed his fate.
It's frustrating that the rightful heir to the Storm King is going to die in middle of a dusty town in some other world, due to being indicted for a crime he didn't commit. It's not how he had ever envisioned his end to be.
Tarvek grabs the gun with his other hand, but the second or so that it took is all the time Nisha may need to kill him]
[ Well, of course, nothing could ever be that simple.
The Sheriff has moved away from the duel, off to the porch while they were fighting. He's plopped down in his rocking chair, chewing his wad and letting his eyes closed as they go. He looks pretty peaceful.
The reason for that is pretty apparent as Nisha holds the gun to Tarvek's head and the ground under them seems to, ah, crumble. The entire town shakes for a while and a hole in the ground opens up under Tarvek. It will only be a split second until he's falling, swallowed up by the dirt.
A moment later, the ground shifts again and Nisha is standing there with no one to shoot. The Sheriff's eyes open and he calls out -- ]
Huh, guess you won. Back in your cell with you, Nisha. Y'might not want to deal with all the yelling that's about to happen.
[ Nisha tips up her hat with her pistol and stares at the ground for a moment longer. She clearly was not expecting that either, and in addition to her shock is a little disappointed that she didn't actually get in the killing shot.
Then she looks back at the Sheriff. ]
I might start doing some yelling myself if you don't explain yourself a little.
[ Oh, fine. As she walks back into the station, he calls out after her -- ]
It's 'cause you have a role!
[ He looks back at the rest of the crowd then, patting at his pockets for a pipe or a cigar or something. He'll come out with the pipe in a second, looking mildly successful then. ]
Nisha here has a role. She's my Coal Miner. She takes care of folks I need taken care of, people who ain't doing their do here. I need her to take care of someone else before I can let y'all kill her. Simple as.
Tarvek, on the other hand, boy's been a good sport. If he makes his way back, he makes his way back. We leave it at that.
[it all clicks into place. Nisha's injury from the strip search. the dead bodies they found in the mines. her role. . .]
[she steps forward, hands balled into fists at her side, and calls out]
Sheriff! Is Nisha the one who killed Ocelot and Undertaker in the mines?!
[she had assumed the Sheriff did it when she had spoken to him about the identity of the second body the other day, and he said Undertaker wasn't doing enough and had to go. but this? puts everything in a whole new light]
[props her hand on her hip, some of the excitement from the execution's events fading away. it makes sense. she can't believe she didn't see it before]
. . . I see.
[a pause]
Will you entertain questions about the tunnels underneath the town at a later time?
She's staring at the ground where Tarvek disappeared into, and she looks absolutely horrified as she starts yelling.]
Bring him back! You can't keep him down there, you have to... You can't say he's been a fucking good sport and then send him there, you know what it's like! Hal!
[ Despite one small outburst the first time Tarvek got shot, Xion has otherwise been ..... very quiet for this whole thing. Even when the ground swallowed her roommate whole.
Now she finds her way over to Natalie's side, staying close and looking up at her with concern. ]
[gllllances at her, expression neutral (like it had been during the entire duel), but she does. sidle a bit closer. she understands Natalie's frustrations and fear]
[...yeah allllso a glance because. Yeah. This is alarming. With the two other girls flanking Natalie though he stays where he's at even if he's keeping an eye on her.]
[He's in disbelief both at the duel, Tarvek's fate, and Nisha's role reveal. He doesn't know what he wants to tackle first but he's giving Hal a blank look, ignoring his bandaged hands and the fact he hasn't slept for three days.]
Hal. How hard will it be for him to make his way back? Can you tell us that?
[What else can he say? He understands fate way too well to argue, so Hal's lucky today when he backs off. He has a small Disney princess to watch over first.]
